Non-Medical Mask for Frontline Essential Workers

Non-Medical Mask for Frontline Essential Workers

Regular price $ 0.00 CAD Sale

This is our first limited release of NON-MEDICAL cloth masks for frontline staff. We will be releasing these in batches EVERY DAY at 9pm EST, until April 12. We will keep making these free of charge for frontline staff *** and for donation to hospitals, as long as we still have access to resources. At this time, we are only shipping ONE MASK PER ORDER. Please note, Airmail Shipping does not include tracking, unless stated as Tracked Packet or a more premium service.

Cotton Mask- No Filter:
The mask is made from tightly woven cotton on the outside and cotton flannel/terry or equivalent on the inside. The mask does not feature any filtration and we do not make any claims of effectiveness against bacteria and/or viruses. These may be worn over sanctioned PPE's to prolong their use. This mask is best for airflow, and while it may not protect the wearer from the virus, it may help reduce transmission in the general population. The mask may be washed in the washing machine and should be air dried (in direct sunlight) or sanitized with minimum 70% rubbing alcohol (by spraying entirely and allowing to dry fully). They can also be microwaved on high for 3 minutes to disinfect, as they feature no metal materials.

The masks are arched high on the nose and domed around the nose and mouth, hugging closely under the chin and extending up to the ears. The mask has elastics which are worn behind the head and at the nape of the neck. They are sized generously but you may knot them behind the head if you need to.

Even if used as advised, we do not make any guarantees about the effectiveness of non-medical masks against protecting you or others from COVID-19 or any other infections.

Research on non-medical mask generously provided by Community Make Toronto. I based my pattern on the specifications outlined by the following document: GUIDE TO PPE and MASK TUTORIAL. Please read it carefully and follow proper use instructions, noting the safety safety limitations of non-medical masks.

***Masks are free for frontline staff, but you pay for shipping. Please do not purchase unless you are an essential services staff member, as you will be taking resources  away from people who need them most. Physical distancing and rigorous hand hygiene are still the best means of stopping the spread of infection for the public at large, as stated by the government of Canada.

Please follow these instructions when using a non-medial mask for protection:

Wearing masks

Medical masks, including surgical, medical procedure face masks and respirators (like N95 masks), must be kept for healthcare workers and others providing direct care to COVID-19 patients.
Wearing a non-medical mask (for example a homemade cloth mask) in the community has not been proven to protect the person wearing it. Strict hygiene and public health measures, including frequent hand washing and physical (social) distancing, will reduce your chance of being exposed to the virus.
Wearing a non-medical mask is an additional measure you can take to protect others around you.
Wearing a non-medical mask is another way to cover your mouth and nose to prevent your respiratory droplets from contaminating others or landing on surfaces. Just like our recommendation not to cough into your hands (instead, cover your cough with tissues or your sleeve) a mask can reduce the chance that others are coming into contact with your respiratory droplets.
If wearing a non-medical mask makes you feel safer and stops you from touching your nose and mouth, that is also good. But remember not to touch or rub your eyes.
It is important to understand that non-medical masks have limitations and need to be used safely.
If you choose to use a non-medical face mask:

  • you must wash your hands immediately before putting it on and immediately after taking it off (in addition to practicing good hand hygiene while wearing it)
  • it should fit well (non-gaping)
  • you should not share it with others

Face masks can become contaminated on the outside, or when touched by your hands. When wearing a mask, take the following precautions to protect yourself:

  • avoid touching your face mask while using it
  • change a cloth mask as soon as it gets damp or soiled
    • put it directly into the washing machine or a bag that can be emptied into the washing machine and then disposed of
    • cloth masks can be laundered with other items using a hot cycle, and then dried thoroughly.
  • non-medical masks that cannot be washed should be discarded and replaced as soon as they get damp, soiled or crumpled
    • dispose of masks properly in a lined garbage bin
    • don’t leave discarded masks in shopping carts, on the ground, etc.

Non-medical masks alone will not prevent the spread of COVID-19. You must consistently and strictly adhere to good hygiene and public health measures, including frequent hand washing and physical (social) distancing.
